Smartcards Revolutionize Fare Payment

USA Today recaps some of the rapid advancements in the use of smartcard technology in mass transit. "Tap and go" is the new "exact fare required". By the time KC launches our light rail system, this could be the default choice for your ticket to ride.

    Smartcards sound great as long as there is a cash option. If cash payments are not accepted at all stops, it would most certainly have a negative impact on ridership. Lower income people are the majority users of mass transits. I believe that lower income people tend to prefer cash transactions.

    Yes, it is important to include cash ticket machines at all stops, and higher income residents can purchase metrocards. Both the cards and the tickets should be able to be validated/ scanned within the train.
