I am disappointed that many have concluded that we have to go forward with light rail because the voters gave it a strong thumbs up. The fact is we won’t be able to use the 3/8 cent sales tax for light rail if it steals from the bus system, so light rail will need its own “new” funding.

The people who voted were deceived by Chastains ballot language and would vote differently if the facts on funding and costs were known.

That’s why the city is drafting a new plan and will return to voters in the spring. The reason light rail will be at least in the urban core first is that is where the population and job density is (although the consulants think we can “afford” 12 miles, initially… river to Plaza is only 5). There is simply no other place in the *entire* metro with 100,000 people AND 200,000 jobs in a 1×5 mile strip. If you refuse to acknowledge that then you will be sorely disappointed with whatever plan the city delivers.

Questioning voters’ intentions on the Nov. 2006 vote is a popular pasttime, but we’re now at a point where it simply doesn’t matter and adds nothing to the process. A new vote will occur and it will either pass or fail. All you need to do is show up on Feb. 5 and make your voice heard.

crasho: because private automobiles are very safe and don’t pollute? no one is talking about solving a traffic problem. if we were, we’d be putting light rail down 435. light rail has proven it can build density where it didn’t exist before. the ATA will ask for additional funding to keep the buses running, then likely revise routes once a spine is in place. the polling suggests the repeal will fail, and voters will get to choose a revised plan around the same time.

the fact is, kansas citians put this on the front-burner and only future votes will determine if it stays there, not your anti-transit rhetoric.
